Dustin and Steve talk about life as a wedding photographer when you have a child surprise in the middle of wedding season. Okay, not a child surprise. This isn't the Witcher... but an unexpected bundle of joy nonetheless. They also talk about how you should react if a client doesn't really want you at the wedding. As well as the pains of shooting a wedding video solo when things like card reading are brought up on the day of the wedding, moments before the ceremony as something the client wants to do before the ceremony. It's a tough week. Beer Talk: Steve - Fuity Nuggets X2 by 450 North Brewing Company Dustin - All Day IPA by Founders brewing Company Q&A: Why do clients still ask to see examples of photographer's work when photographers post their work everywhere online? How long did you keep shooting weddings after getting pregnant? How long after childbirth till you started shooting again? How did you feel? What considerations do you need to make before having an associate shooter work for you? Follow Jenn Van Elk: Website, Instagram, Twitter, Facebook Want more? This week we talk about how Dustin tried to murder Steve in cold blood but make it look like an accident. I don't know what else there is to write about here... Lightroom Masks, I guess? Steve almost died for this episode art. Wake up people, Dustin attempted to murder him. Why isn't anyone calling the cops? Does no one read these show notes? A man's life is on the line. Beer Talk: Steve - Fruity Nuggets 2x by 450 North Brewing Company Dustin - DDH Ever Clear by Bearded Iris Q&A: What would you do if another photographer hired you for a shoot and then lied about how the shoot went as a marketing ploy for their business? How do you respond to clients asking for discounts because they went on too many vacations? Should you supply RAW files to corporate clients? Want more? This week Steve and Dustin talk to Kathy Netti and Mollie Beach of Kodak Professional about Kodak Professional Select. This is a new software/service from Kodak Professional that helps photographers cull their photo shoots quickly by using AI to group photos and surface the best photos, so that you don't have to look at all the photos where your subjects are blinking. Kodak Professional Select also helps you cull details too by grouping photos of objects in a similar way to how it does photos of people, so you can pick out the most in focus, best looking detail shots from your wedding day too. Steve and Dustin also pitch some pretty great ideas to Kathy and Mollie for Kodak Professional to use going off the basis of this amazing technology, like a special Midnight Edition of the software. Dustin and Steve are easing back into the new world of post-covid-vaccine weddings. Dustin is busy with real estate. Steve is trying out new straps for his cameras. Corny puns. Slippery nips. HBO Max. Steve drops big news and then even bigger news to end the episode. Beer Talk: Steve - Bourbon Barrel No Sparge Imperial Golden Ale from Taxman Brewing Co. Dustin - Soft Parade by Short's Brewing Company Q&A: What do you do if you live with someone who gets covid, but you're still testing negative? Do you call off your shoots anyway? Is anyone still on clubhouse? Do you cater to guests who ask for photos of themselves 3 days after a wedding? Have you ever had a couple go at it when you ask them to kiss? Like, really go at it? Episode art by everyone's favorite wedding celebrant Josh Withers. If you're looking for more info about COVID-19, be sure to head over to the CDC website. Want more? Adam Mason of The Bearded Tog and Mason Photography joins us this week to talk about life, photography, music, cryptocurrency, scientific films, dogecoin and the movie Whiplash. Steve and Adam also talk about conference photography, political photography, and commercial work. The also talk about whether or not your mortgage company cares about how you made your money. Q&A: Should I let my husband second shoot for other female photographers when he's never shown an interest in it before but one of my competitors keeps asking if she can hire him? I grew my beard out and we stopped booking clients, should I shave my beard so we can make money again? My sister thinks her photographer deleted her wedding photos because I brought my camera to the wedding. She's demanding I pay for a new wedding or else produce a complete gallery of her wedding when I didn't shoot anything but getting ready. What do I do? I booked a client at a discount because I was supposed to get show photos from their BDSM conference on my site but when I showed up they took my phone and cards and forbid me from saving any photos anywhere. Can I ask for more money now since they didn't live up to their end of the agreement? Find more Adam Mason: Website, Instagram, Bearded Tog Podcast, Twitter, Facebook Want more? This week Steve talks with Casey Fatchett of the Nerdy Photographer. They talk a lot about Casey's podcast and how he makes it. They also talk about his Heiland 3-Cell Flash Gun. Look it's a pretty tangent heavy episode where Casey mostly entertains Steve with stories about being an actor. He was up for a roll in Vanilla Sky and he was up to do the voice of the Geico Gecko, and he shares with Steve why he didn't get those parts. It's all interlaced with chat about photography and the need for self-care so you don't die shooting weddings. Beer Talk: Casey - 90/~ Wee Heavy from Belhaven Brewery and also some scotch. Steve - Moon Rambler IPA from Founders Brewing Co. Q&A: If I roll a critical fail while shooting a wedding that's making everyone roll to determine how well they'll do (they love DnD)... do I have to critically fail? Should I ask clients if I can bring my own weed to smoke while shooting their weddings since my clients stopped sharing their joints during the pandemic? What sort of wrap can I put on my camera body that looks professional but still shows off my inner nerd? (I would consider anything Doctor Who, Star Trek, Battlestar Galactica, Babylon 5, Star Gate or Farscape related, no Star Wars please) How can I get a client to stop leaving gross emoji memos on venmo when I sell them stuff? My friends think this guy is paying me for sex because it's all eggplant gush or peach gush every time I make a sale to him. This week it’s a very special crossover episode with Mel Johnstone and Dwayne Larson of the Filters Removed podcast. In this episode we talk about a wide variety of topics, like picking perfect pastries to procure professional employment and a bridesmaid stalking the wedding photographer. Beer Talk: Dwayne - Water Mel - Lindeman’s Bin 45 Cabernet Sauvignon Dustin - Zombie Dust by Three Floyds Steve - Charlatan American Pale Ale by Maplewood Brewing Co. Q&A: How do you tell your mom you don’t want to shoot your stepbrother’s wedding? What do you do if a couples boudoir session gets out of hand and you’re left with sheets with a wet spot? Jess Robertson joins us to talk about things you can do to make your website and business more inclusive. We talk about how Jess got started in wedding photography, why she wanted to make her business more inclusive, and how she presents herself and her business online to attract clients. We also talk about beer and Michigan breweries and how establishing a good report with a local brewery can be beneficial to your business. Beer Talk: Jess - Watermelon Hard Seltzer by White Claw Dustin - Sex and Candy by 18th Street Brewery Steve - Icelandic Wee Heavy by Einstok Olgerd Q&A: Instead of referring to clients in the contract as husband and wife could we call them passionate lover #1 and passionate lover #2? Is it possible to be an exclusive, luxury wedding photographer and inclusive? Where is an elopement in Michigan if someone just points to there thumb? I accidentally wrote cow girls and space guys in an email to a throuple getting married, how do I recover? Which Detroit sports teams should I do a stylized shoot with their gear? This week Steve talks to James Broadbent of Narrative and Chasewild about building tools to help streamline workflows for photographers. They talk about Narrative Publish and Narrative Select and how they reduce the time it takes to publish blogs and also cull shoots. Steve and James also chat about Narrative's response to the Covid-19 Pandemic and how Narrative helped out their clients during the past year. Also they chat about how James got started in photography (with a 50mm in Pakistan taking photos of mountains during a trip) and about his destination photography company Chasewild. Q&A: Is Narrative Apple only and if so, when will it come to Windows? I don't like the idea of paying to keep blog posts on my site, but more importantly what is your favorite color? Can someone explain why photographers waste so much time culling photos? I shoot 100 and I deliver 100. What's the problem? I shoot family photos on burst mode and need a way to speed up post processing, what should I do? This week Steve was joined by Brandon Wong of the Photobooth Supply Co. Brandon talked to Steve about why he transitioned from being a wedding photographer to creating a photobooth company that could help photographers and other event vendors make more money. Brandon and Steve also talk about the changes Photobooth Supply Co. made this last year to help their clients keep earning money during the pandemic, and they also talk a little bit about the future of photobooths. Q&A: Where do you get your jumpsuits for conferences? Where do you think AR fits into the future of photobooths? Do you have to encourage guests at events to take dick pics or does that just happen organically? If a skunk sprays your salsa photobooth can you clean off the stank with tomato juice? This week we talk with Josh Withers about his switch from editing photos on the iPad Pro to a new M1 MacBook. We also talk about some crazy theory about the right way to pose men and women in photos that's some weird toxic masculinity crap, using your Facebook group to charge vendors to post, and looking for a way to get a venue for 500 people that has a 100% refundable deposit and also is available in three months. Q&A: Has anyone been shooting in the pandemic? Has anyone been put into any interesting situations because of Covid? What considerations do you need to keep in mind for associate photographers if it's your first time using one? Links: Which way is your client's genitals pointing? This week we welcome Ulices Del Toro back to the podcast to talk about life after having a baby. We also talk about the Sony A1 and the Fujifilm GFX 100s a little (but not too much because neither of us have those cameras). The photographer of the viral Bernie Sanders photo was interviewed by Rolling Stone and had some thoughts to share about his photo and we also talk about Airmap suggesting that drone flights be monetized by the government. Beer Talk: Ulices - Features & Benefits by Stone Brewing Steve - Augustus Gloop's Secret Stash by Books & Brews Q&A: If you team up with another photographer to offer video, should you brand your video on your own or let your video just fall under their brand? If a wedding is rescheduled and then happens without the photographer, but the clients still want photos in their wedding attire, what do you charge them? If you don't want people giving speeches and doing vows to stare at their phones, then is gifting them notebooks or vow books a good idea? Links: Sony A1 specs on the Verge. How has the dismal vaccine rollout affected photographers? Some photographers have been kicked off Instagram since the insurrection on January 6th, is it related (it's not)? We're demanding to see location information to find out (we're terrible people and we're actually quite sorry for all of this). Sony a7iii impressions from shooting elopements and engagements. What a weird world it is to leave Canon for Sony. That weird Via Getty story from the insurrection. A daredevil photographer gets arrested for burglary. Lots of coronavirus talk and a few political things (we're not sorry about that... it's been a weird time period and we think it's important to talk about that kind of stuff... even if we're just making jokes). Sony Airpeak updates and sneak peeks. It's sexy (just like this show). Beer Talk: Steve - Gulo Gulo India Pale Lager from Wolverine State Brewing Dustin - Nothing... Not Even Water Q&A: Any tips or advice for trying to reach a different, more high end, market? Should all hobby photographers be shot and their bodies put on display as a warning to others? (hard no) What is a fauxtographer? Links: Sony Airpeak updates. Daredevil photographer arrested. The Via Getty story. Episode art by Michael Orlando of Bloom Photos. This week we're talking Christmas gifts and the things we missed in 2020 and the things we're looking forward to in 2021. But it's mostly not holiday related. We have updates on birds that rhyme with Sony as well as updates on more terrible things that Pass is doing. We're also talking about the longest exposure photo ever taken, a touchpad replacement for a shutter button and DJI being put on the economic blacklist. Plus, drone photos of landscapes that look rather phallic. Nature's d**k pics. Beer Talk: Steve - Exemption from Taxman Brewing Company Dustin - Yellowstone Bourbon Q&A: What do you do if a second shooter takes a bunch of photos that aren't deliverable in any way, shape or form? Should you switch from Android to iPhone so your photography business brand seems more luxurious? Is it okay to not pay a photographer for their work if they showed up late with a child? This episode is weird. Dustin could have sent Steve his audio. Steve could have asked for that audio when he realized it wasn't there... but then Steve's massive frustration with Dustin's weird Skype glitches wouldn't shine through in the episode and then people would just think Steve and Dustin were frustrated for other reasons than technology... So here's that sweet Skype audio everyone craves so that you all know what horrors Steve and Dustin faced. This week we talk about the AirPods Max, Dustin's new fugly Kickstarter shoes (they're worse than moonshoes somehow), and people dying during or after shoots. It's a little bit morose but we promise to handle the topic with same level of tactless crassness that we always bring to the table. We also talk about people developing film in beer. Hell yeah! Finally we talk about the Sony Pony Droney (which we hold is a better name than AirPeak). Beer Talk: Steve - Eirik Bloodaxe (the best beer in the world) by Scarlet Lane Brewing Dustin - Fat Tire by New Belgium Brewing Q&A: WTF is the point of a photographer listing their gear or camera systems in their Instagram info, etc? What do you do if a wedding client is hiring different photographers for different parts of the day? Is it okay to edit noses and dorsal humps of your subjects without talking to them first to make sure it's something they want? Links: Shoes uglier than moonshoes. Developing film in beer. This week we're going hard in the paint on Q&A. We talk about treatment and pay of second shooters, whether it's okay to call other photographers out when they lie, if you should tell other photographers not to buy DSLRs, whether or not you should have in-laws in family photos, and if you should plan elopements for people before they officially hire you. In the post show we talk about 30 Rock, Neil Gaiman's American Gods, Brandon Sanderson's Mistborn series and the Stormlight Archive series, and also  the Harley Quinn series. It's a book heavy post show... well, audiobooks (our biggest competitor... why are we doing this?). Episode art by Stephanie Sonju of Sonju Photography. This is our first episode back after our fraught pre-election episode. It's been a confusing anxiety filled month as our current president refuses to acknowledge that he lost the election. He lost bigly. But we're finally back with an episode full of confusing jokes and poorly done accents. We're talking about Cole Haans and Hush Puppies in followup (trademark John Siracusa) then it's on to talking about RSI issues. Steve's been having a lot. While looking for a new office chair, Steve found some humorous questions and answers on Amazon's site (Dustin doesn't find them amusing at all). We also talk about squishy things to pillow the wrist while using a keyboard and mouse and standing desk converters. Then we talk about bad SEO advice and Parler (and you thought we were done with the political talk in the opener... somebody please end it). Also, Dustin talks about his Santa sessions and Steve mentions his frustrations with Pixifi (which isn't as good as hornybook which is a software that will get you there, according to Dustin). We also spend a long time talking about the M1 chips and the new iPhone's camera (primarily as a result of Josh Wither's fantastic blog post). Beer Talk: Dustin - H 2 O (it's not a beer, he's drinking water because he's sick) Steve - Eirik Bloodaxe by Scarlet Lane Brewing (it is a beer, he's drinking beer despite being sick because he's an idiot) Our recording went super long, so we're breaking Q&A up into a separate episode which will air next week. Links: The Generic Wrist Rest for keyboard and mouse. The Ergonomic Chair by Serta for sitting. The Standing Desk Converter by VIVO for turning your normal desk into a standing one! The iPhone 12 Pro Max that everyone isn't really talking that much about. New Apple M1 Chip in MacBook Pro Protective Case. New Apple M1 Chip in MacBook Air Protective Case. This week we discuss the best cameras for catching pumpkin smashers red-handed, the best full spectrum cameras, how do you get photos of kids on Halloween if they have to wear masks, what doe sit mean if a cloud of smoke passes by you during a real estate video shoot when you're all alone, and demon bokeh photobombs. How bout that title? Think that'll bypass the title censorship laws (do those exist?)? This week we're talking about Steve's RSI issues, the new Sony a7c, and Steve's fear that he's becoming a videographer again. Also, consensual slap-@$$ at weddings. Beer Talk: Dustin - Sex and Candy from 18th Street Brewery Steve - Logue from Half Acre Beer Company Q&A: Prints and albums or all digital delivery?
